Adventures in a CEU Study

There are only a few things in life that are certain. Death – no one gets out alive…Taxes – we all have to pay them….and CEUs -we all need them. paperwork

But, one of the cool things, is that while ASHA tells us we have to have some many – they don’t tell us how we have to get them. Conferences are wonderful but not always at a good time, or they are too expensive, or the speakers aren’t always who we want to listen to. Online CEUs are convenient, usually reasonably priced, but you don’t get the discussion aspect of it so it sort of leaves a person feeling…unfulfilled.

Several of the SLPs on twitter were discussing this concern…and we hit upon a brilliant plan…and I don’t say that lightly!

Several of us have joined http://www.speechpathology.com to do CEUs. Some of the fabulous things about this is they are all ASHA CEUs, they are constantly adding more, and there are already TONS available, they are unlimited CEUS for $99/year, AND if you belong to the ASHA Registry, they’ll send your CEU info to ASHA for keeping. But wait…that’s not the best part!

The BEST part is that we are going to get together to discuss the webinars – sort of like a book study only it will be a webinar CEU Study instead. So, we will have the discussion part we all love about conferences, but the convenience of the online forum.

Here’s how it will work:

1) Take the course (I’ll tell you which one in a minute)

2) Take some notes, tweet…whatever

3) Come together on Google + (Free – if you’re not already there it’s a great opportunity – sort of like skyping with multiple people) and be ready to discuss it. Don’t worry Tara has a blog post here about it. ) Enjoy…repeat every so often. Hopefully we will do this several times throughout the year.

The goal for doing the CEU Study is to help build the knowledge base and share experiences, thoughts, understanding with similarly minded people. As the studies continue, we explore a variety of subjects (such as artic, case management, swallowing, aphasia, etc.) expand to various topics and hopefully we won’t be the only ones who are doing it…others will take off and do it as well.

So…Here is the nitty gritty information.

First, if you’re not a member of speechpathology.com and want to be here’s a great link. You don’t have to use this link – you can go directly to the website and sign up there. One of the cool things speechpathology.com does is reward you if friends sign up. If you sign up using the link, I will receive $25 off my renewal. Now, don’t get me wrong, that’d be nice – but really that’s not the point…the point is to get the CEUs. (If you have a friend who wants to join – give them your link. Share the love!)

If you don’t have the funds to take the course right now – that’s okay. If you’re on twitter @speechykeenSLP will be tweeting highlights from the webinar (before the discussion) at about 12:00 noon PST on Saturday 7/6/13. You could follow along and then feel free to discuss it with us…you just won’t get those necessary CEUs. Either way, we’d love to have you.

Second, if you’re not already on google+, it’s free to sign up and that’s where we will be discussing this topic. If interest goes up, it may change to a different forum, but at least the first few will be here at google+ hangouts. Very cool if you haven’t done it yet. Here’s the link to Tara’s post about hangouts.

Finally, talk…share…teach….learn. Give us the benefit of what you’ve learned – learn from us…it’s all good.

Here are the important details:

Seminar: Putting the Person First – Counseling Skills and Strategies by Dr. Shari Robertson. Tara will use #robertson4240 as the hashtag on twitter.  Twitter posts will start approximately noon on Saturday July 6th (Pacific time). Google Hangout will be on SUNDAY July 7th, at 12:00 noon (pacific time).  This is a fabulous beginning study as we all use counseling in our discussions with family, clients, caregivers, and co-workers and I’m fairly sure we can all use a refresher course.

Will you join us? Leave me a comment here, because I’m nosy that way 🙂   then send an email to Tara at tara at speechykeenslp dot com and she will make sure to send you the invite to the google hangout! I’m really looking forward to this new venture!

Until then…Adventure on!

Mary

  1. Collaboration is so important in online education. The other great thing: you can model the power of collaboration for your students. It’s not “cheating” when you talk about subject matter with fellow students- which is oddly a new idea for some. What kind of collaboration could THEY use (dependent upon age and Internet availability) when they need help with classes? I wonder how they would answer that question.

  2. This is a great idea! I always struggle with online or video learning. I won’t be able to make google hangout for this one but will definitely keep my eye out for them in the future.

  3. Ooo I love this but I’m away for the first one. Will join after that. Do you need to be a member of ASHA to join speech pathology.com?

  4. I agree that this is a great idea! Just now read it though so won’t be able to join in on this one. I’ve wondered how good the Speech Pathology offerings were so that was helpful info.
