I recently read a great post by another SLP, Tatyana Elleseff, over at Smart Speech Therapy LLC.

I strongly recommend that you go read it. It’s a great post about WHY she does what she does, and why some parents (and schools) request her to do it. Intrigued yet? What are you waiting for – go read it. It’s titled: Special Education Disputes and Comprehensive Language Testing: What Parents, Attorneys, and Advocates Need to Know.

Tatyana’s post gave me some pause for thought…and then of course I had to follow the rabbit trail my mind seems to take sometimes. Ultimately, I came away with some questions and deep thoughts about our profession.  Continue reading →

SLPChat is Back!!

I LOVE seeing that the #SLPChats are starting up again! I sincerely hope all of you are able to participate in some way. For those that don’t know, an #SLPChat is a twitter discussion where participants can talk about relevant SLP topics freely. There is some guided discussion, and it’s always a good source of information and thought provoking discussions. In the past, we have discussed Cycles, NSOME, AAC…many different topics.

Would you believe it if we told you that it has been over 5 years that SLPs from different corners of the globe have been using Twitter to network and share their expertise? Furthermore would you believe that the steady daily buzz of thousands of #slpeeps sharing, questioning, interacting, researching on Twitter was at that time a slow trickle, from a handful (literally) of peeps (The term #slpeeps wasn’t coined until later in 2010) searching for ideas, and more importantly similar persons within the field. It must be hard to imagine with the current #slpeeps presence on Twitter, but it truly highlights how far we have come as we continue to make our mark on social media, and on the world.

Another familiar hashtag is about to turn 5 this year as well…..you guessed it #slpchat!! Although we have been dormant for a while (due to work and life…

ASHA2014: EBP or Pseudoscience?

I’m not attending ASHA 2014 this year (very much to my dismay). I wanted to go…I had planned to go…and then one thing after another conspired so that I couldn’t. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not on my mind .. a lot.

First, and foremost, I’m going to miss the #SLPeeps.  SLPeepsLogoWhiteThis will be the first ASHA I’ve missed since we became really active on twitter and I miss connecting with established friends and meeting new friends in real-life. Not to mention they have some really fun activities planned.

But… as fabulous as the #Slpeeps are, they’re not the only reason I have ASHA on my mind (and if you don’t know how fabulous we are, you should check us out on twitter).
