I recently attended a webinar by Presence Learning that was part of their Agents of Change series. Before I go any further, I’d like to suggest that each one of you (if you’re an SLP or Teacher) go to their website and sign up for the newsletters so that you also receive notifications of their free CEUs. It’s hard to believe it’s March…and time for Research Tuesday (again!). I remember being in grad school (or maybe undergrad) and doing a group project on articulation assessments. We were split into groups (or we split ourselves into groups, I don’t remember), and we were required to study an assigned articulation assessment, determine validity, specificity, etc… and critique the administration, picture stimuli, results, etc. It was an interesting assignment. I remember making the power point for it, and I remember talking with the Dean of the department and telling him I wanted to update the test we had (it was horribly out of date), and he said that’d be a great thesis or dissertation project. LOL. Too bad, I can’t remember the name of the test now (I could go look it up, but it’d take too much energy.)
Anyway…When I came upon today’s article, it reminded me of that assignment…and I thought it was important to review. So, without further adieu I bring you Research Tuesday! Continue reading
It’s a new calendar year…and for me, that typically generates a desire to review how therapy is going, figure out what needs tweaking and really reconsider if I need to change an approach. Of course, I do some of this all of the time, but for some reason that break between Christmas and the New Year really makes me question myself.
This year is no exception…and the two students I find myself cycling back to are older elementary/middle school and vocabulary is the root of the issue…Well, attention and comprehension are really the issue, but we’re tackling the vocabulary aspect of both of those. So, while I had time, I dusted off some research files and started reading…This one I read, really resonated with me and I decided I’d make it the first blog of the new year.
I’m not attending ASHA 2014 this year (very much to my dismay). I wanted to go…I had planned to go…and then one thing after another conspired so that I couldn’t. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not on my mind .. a lot.
First, and foremost, I’m going to miss the #SLPeeps. This will be the first ASHA I’ve missed since we became really active on twitter and I miss connecting with established friends and meeting new friends in real-life. Not to mention they have some really fun activities planned.
But… as fabulous as the #Slpeeps are, they’re not the only reason I have ASHA on my mind (and if you don’t know how fabulous we are, you should check us out on twitter).
There’s a fine art to biting your tongue and walking away and diplomacy is a worthy skill to acquire and hone. Recognizing that we all have differences, is another skill that is fabulous to have. However, sometimes, it’s necessary to find a way to correct a wrong, particularly when it’s a common wrong. (Are you confused yet? Bear with me…please?)
This post has been a while in coming…and I’m fairly sure it will exasperate some and anger others. I sincerely hope that most of you will find it enlightening rather than annoying. I have bit my tongue and walked away from the computer screen a lot lately…now I’m attempting to correct a wrong. Continue reading

I almost didn’t have a Research Tuesday post. I could come up with some pithy excuses, but they’d just be excuses…suffice it to say, there was nothing that really spoke to me that I’d read. In fact, I wondered if I’d been burnt out from reading all these articles (not really!). Then I was speaking with a teacher in my school and remembered I had stored away an article to use for my own research and hadn’t yet. It was relevant, and interesting, and … uhm…maybe a bit controversial. So…I had to use it…right? I had to! First, though, I have to give a shout out to Tatyana Elleseff at Smart Speech Therapy for providing the link to me (I’ll bet she never expected me to use it this way!). It’s a bit different…and has an odd flow to it, but it’s here. So…without further ado…I bring you Research Tuesday!
