Confidence with Autism

It’s that time of the month again…wait! Not THAT!

It’s Research Tuesday!

research tuesdayThat means it’s time for the SLP Bloggers to dust off their journal sleuthing skills and review an article. I seem to always have trouble deciding on which article I want to write about. I either have several and can’t seem to choose, or none of them inspire me. Thankfully, after several days of hemming and hawing…err…preocastrination looking around I decided on the following article. So…without further delay… Continue reading

Bad Budgets and a Call for Action

Imagine my surprise when I was happily perusing twitter…and I saw a tweet in all caps.

Now, for those of you not in the know…that’s just rude. I mean it’s RUDE! (see…it gets your attention). When the person who tweeted it is near and dear to me and familiar with twitter etiquette or “twitiquette” as I like to call it, I knew it wasn’t rude…it was important.

Common Core Controversy

It’s no secret that many of the states are going to Common Core State Standards. It’s also no secret that many (many many) people are adamantly against them. Apparently some states adopted them and then changed their mind and backed out. Who knows, maybe many more will too and CCSS will be a thing of the past.

Vowel Viz Announcement!

****UPDATE**** I was just contacted by Vowel-Viz. They are running a promo (find it here) where if you buy a copy of their vowel-viz SCHOOLS you can receive a tongue placement poster for free…BUT the purchase must be done before 4/30/14. (IN NO WAY am I responsible for the accuracy or quality of the poster or the promotion…I am solely passing along the information).  It looks like a great poster – if you get it let me know how it is! ****END UPDATE****

It’s Saturday the 22nd…that means it’s time to figure out which two people won the Vowel Viz codes! vocalic r

Vowels, vowels, who has the vowels…

Also known as HOW can I get a good /r/ out of this kid? teamwork

I’m fairly sure /r/ is one of the most hated sounds to have to work on, simply because it can be so tricky and there are SO many variations. But, I’ll tell you a secret if you promise not to tell anyone…I secretly like it. It’s a challenge. I’d much rather have a kid with a severe sound-system disorder (read phono) than a simple artic issue. I know…I’m weird.  Even though I like a challenge, I’m always on the lookout for an app or some tool to help make it a bit easier for our kids. I mean, /r/ is challenging enough without prolonging it, right? Keep reading for a chance to win! Continue reading

Friend or Foe? Tales of childhood bullying.

Also known as Adventures in Article Reviews 7 (Bullying)

One of the biggest issues facing schools (and workplaces, if we’re honest) is bullying. Adults bully adults…adults bully kids…kids bully kids…kids bully adults…wait.. Yep. That’s right. It happens. We all agree it’s wrong, but we can’t always agree on what bullying is. What we can agree on though, is that often our clients with communication differences are among those most often targeted for bullying. So what can we do?

Adventures with Guest Blogging?

The other day I was ranting…err…expounding…uhm… talking about Continuing Ed credits. (Some of you may not realize this, but I recently challenged myself to get at least 1 CEU a week throughout the year – so that by the end of the year I’ll have 52 CEUs as a minimum.) Sounds like a lofty goal doesn’t it? In reality, it’s because I want the cheaper liability insurance that comes with being an ACE recipient (and I want to be able to brag about it…there I said it. Don’t judge.) CEUs Continue reading

To Be or Not To Be…Adventures in Research – 6

Also known as…You’re Considering a PhD? Are you Nuts?

It’s no secret that I periodically toss around the idea of getting my PhD. In fact, about a year ago, I had decided I was going to do it and that’s all there was to it. Fast forward a year, and here I am…no PhD (well, duh! it takes longer than a year)…and to be honest, I haven’t even retaken the GRE (although that’s mainly because I disagreed with having to take it to get my MS and I resent having to do it again to get my PhD…but I digress).

So, when looking for today’s research article, I was pleased when I this gem came across my screen. So, without further ado I present, the 6th installment of Research Tuesday. Read the compilation of everyone’s article reviews here.

Adventures with Zero-to-Hero – day 3

Also known as I’ve already done that let’s move on…wait..I should do what?

Today’s assignment for the Zero-to-Hero challenge was to write that first post that inspired us to blog in the first place… uhm..yeah. Either I’ve already done that or I’ve forgotten what it was. Thankfully, the wise people at WordPress.com understand blogging (and bloggers) and accounted for those of us that are a bit late to the game (or early depending on your view). They also suggested making a list of what we want to blog about…and other stuff.

Although I can’t think of what my original blog post plan was (I’m going on the assumption I already posted it), the assignment made me think about what I should be blogging about. I realized it’s easy for me to blog when I have a strong opinion about something…but the rest of the time, I’m still sort of amazed that anyone would want to read what I type. This post helped me get beyond my insecurities about blogging by reminding me why I chose to do it in the first place.
